A son born into a new marriage

Nero Claudius Drusus was the younger son of Livia and her first husband, Tiberius Claudius Nero, born just months after Livia’s marriage to Augustus in 38 BCE — close enough to the wedding that gossip of the day wondered aloud whose son he really was, though Suetonius reports the rumour without endorsing it. He grew up in Augustus’s household alongside his elder brother Tiberius, and married Antonia Minor, with whom he had three children: Germanicus, Livilla, and the future emperor Claudius.

Rome’s deepest reach into Germania

Drusus built his reputation as a general on the German frontier, campaigning beyond the Rhine in a series of expeditions between 12 and 9 BCE, constructing canals and fortifications, and pushing Roman arms as far as the Elbe — deeper into Germanic territory than any Roman commander before him. The Senate later awarded him, and his descendants, the honorific title Germanicus in recognition of these campaigns.

A death that Augustus rushed to meet

Drusus died in 9 BCE after a fall from his horse during his German campaign, reportedly from complications of the injury rather than the fall itself. Augustus and Tiberius are said to have travelled to reach him before he died; Tiberius, according to ancient accounts, walked much of the journey on foot beside the litter carrying his brother’s body back to Rome. Drusus never lived to see his son Germanicus become a celebrated general in his own right, or his other son Claudius become emperor.
